I was going through Twitter during lunch and I saw a lot of tweets quoting LFO's songs like Girl on TV and Summer Girls. Coincidentally, I was listening to them a few hours back when I started working. A few more tweets later, I found out that Rich Cronin, the band's rapper/lead died of leukemia today. (May he rest in peace.)
LFO was one of the boy bands I loved when I was 13. I would download the lyrics of their songs from the net (which was relatively new back then) and memorize them by playing the song on repeat and singing along. I think their first released single was "Summer Girls." As a teenager, I was fascinated with how references to William Shakespeare, New Kids, Michael J. Fox, Footloose, Home Alone, and Larry Bird were all included in the song that was really about a summer fling. It didn't all make sense to me back then (as if rap songs make a lot of sense), but I was quite happy with myself when I got to rap the fast verses of Summer Girls after 4-5 rounds of "practice."
Rich sang those parts.
You know that feeling that your generation is getting older? I kinda felt that when I heard the news. It's just like finding out that half your batchmates back in High School have gotten married and had two kids already. Or that a classmate from college died of an accident. I was telling my friend that pop icons from our childhood are starting to die one by one. LFO was not exactly an icon, but they were definitely a part of my growing up years.
Here's the video of of Girl on TV. I do remember reading from Bop (one of the popular "tabloid" mags for teenagers back then - yes, I was that kind of teenager!) that Rich had huge crush on Jennifer Love Hewitt. Which is why she's "the girl in the dress who took my breath away" in the music video ;)
In case you couldn't tell, yup, I was a 90s (fan)girl.
